Evaluation of Zeolite as a Binding Agent to Mitigate Ammonia Loss from Pig Slurry and Manure

چکیده

Nitrogen (N) in livestock food sources that does not end up in a product (e.g. milk or eggs) or that does not get incorporated in body tissue is excreted by the animal. Nitrogen in the urine is in the form of urea which can rapidly hydrolyse to form ammonium carbonate. The decomposition of ammonium carbonate frees up ammonium ions that can volatilise as gaseous ammonia (NH3). Hydrolysis of urea is facilitated by the enzyme urease, which is abundant in soils and plant roots as well as in animal faeces. However N excreted in animal faeces is typically bound up in organic compounds which need to be mineralized to the ammonium form before NH3 volatilisation can occur (Ndegwa et al., 2008).

Effect of adding alum or zeolite to dairy slurry on ammonia volatilization and chemical composition.

Development of cost-effective amendments for treating dairy slurry has become a critical problem as the number of cows on farms continues to grow and the acreage available for manure spreading continues to shrink. To determine effectiveness and optimal rates of addition of either alum or zeolite to dairy slurry, we measured ammonia emissions and resulting chemical changes in the slurry in respo...

Simulation of Long-Term Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics in Grassland-Based Dairy Farming Systems to Evaluate Mitigation Strategies for Nutrient Losses

Many measures have been proposed to mitigate gaseous emissions and other nutrient losses from agroecosystems, which can have large detrimental effects for the quality of soils, water and air, and contribute to eutrophication and global warming. Due to complexities in farm management, biological interactions and emission measurements, most experiments focus on analysis of short-term effects of i...

Ammonia emissions from pig and cattle slurry in the field and utilization of slurry nitrogen in crop production Doctoral Dissertation

Volatilization of ammonia (NH3) from animal manure is a major pathway for nitrogen (N) losses that cause eutrophication, acidification, and other environmental hazards. In this study, the effect of alternative techniques of manure treatment (aeration, separation, addition of peat) and application (broadcast spreading, band spreading, injection, incorporation by harrowing) on NH3 emissions in th...

Quality and function of anaerobic digestion residues

The growing number of biogas plants in Europe has resulted in increased production of nutrient-rich digestate, which has potential as fertiliser on arable land. Many different organic materials can be degraded in the anaerobic digestion process, with most macronutrients and micronutrients retained in the digestate. Depending on the ingoing organic substrate and management of the biogas process,...

Ammonia emission from field applied manure and its reduction—invited paper

Emissions of ammonia to the atmosphere are considered a threat to the environment and both United Nation treaty and European Union legislation increasingly limit emissions. Livestock farming is the major source of atmospheric NH3 in Europe and field applied manure contributes significantly to the emission of NH3 from agriculture. This paper presents a review of studies of NH3 emission from fiel...
